Research assistant Ava Platt presented her poster at the virtual 2020 Spring Symposium held by the Office of Undergraduate Research. Her research focused on “Glial Responses to Alterations of GABAB Receptors in Hyperglycemia and Alzheimer’s Disease.” Ava was also a finalist for the Best Poster Presentation Award in Health, Natural Sciences and Engineering.

Congratulations to Nicholas Kolch for being a recipient of the 2020 McNair Summer Research Scholarship! This is a nationally recognized scholarship that allows students to conduct a portion of a research project, with continued support through graduate school.
Research assistant Kyle Diago presented his poster at the virtual 2020 Spring Symposium held by the Office of Undergraduate Research. He researched the effects of baclofen, a GABA B receptor agonist, on a mouse model of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Jefferson Kinney and Dr. James Hyman received a R01 grant from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health for the research project “Aging and Hyperglycemia Alter Molecular Mechanisms and Hippocampal Oscillations Consistent with Alzheimer’s Disease.” Congratulations!
Andrew Ortiz was accepted to the Graduate College Rebel Research and Mentorship Program (RAMP). This is an award that allows graduate students whom the Graduate College has chosen to collaborate with undergraduate students to build a strong scholarly community at UNLV. This award is accompanied by a large stipend to travel to conferences.
Renzo Chuapoco won the 2019 McNair Scholarship. This is a Nationally recognized scholarship that allows research assistants to work closely with graduate students to conduct a portion of a research project. This allows the research assistant to become more independent, and enhance their research skills. The program comes with a stipend. McNair is recognized and continues to support individuals through graduate school.
Ava Platt is one of two UNLV recipients of the National Barry Goldwater Scholarship. This is a prestigious undergraduate award for STEM students intending to pursue research careers. Winners are given a large stipend that pays for tuition, books, and more.
Christian “Kitan” Guese won a 2019 Summer Research Award for the Office of Undergraduate Research. This award provides a stipend and allows the student to work closely with a graduate student to conduct a portion of a research experiment.
Amanda Leisgang, Andrew Ortiz and Arnold Salazar were winning recipients of the 2020 IDeA National Resource for Proteomics Faculty and Student Workshop in Little Rock, AR. The Proteomics Faculty and Student Workshop is a conference where faculty and doctoral students gain a fundamental understanding of how proteomics (i.e. Mass Spectrometry) can be incorporated into their research.
Karen Castillo Alcazar is a winning recipient of the AANAPISI and LSAMP Spring Semester Research Experience (SSRE) program. This is a scholarship that allows research assistants to work closely with graduate students to conduct a portion of a research project. This allows the research assistant to become more independent, and enhance their research skills. The program comes with a large stipend.
